FAQs
PREVAL SPRAYER
Is the Preval Sprayer better than a standard aerosol paint can?
Yes! The Preval Sprayer is superior to a standard aerosol paint can for many reasons.
First, you can fill the Sprayer with the exact amount of paint you wish to use, minimizing waste. Second, you can add in hardeners, accelerators, catalysts to inexpensively create 2-component spray paints . Finally, standard aerosol cans allow paint to sit for long periods of time, becoming adulterated by mixing with the solvents and propellents. In the Preval Sprayer, paint and the propellant never mix in their liquid state.
The Sprayer holds less than 2oz. of propellant and sprays up to 16oz of paint or liquid OR 18 minutes continuously. For paint coverage see second page of Owners Manual –
Is the Preval Sprayer affordable compared to regular aerosol cans?
There is no comparison, when you factor in the Sprayer’s versatility. The cost of a Preval Sprayer is about the same cost as most aerosol paint cans–less than $10. But with the Sprayer, any paint can be aerosolized. One Sprayer can be used multiple times to spray numerous different paints. In addition, the Sprayer can accommodate 18 oz. of paint compared to aerosol paint cans, which normally contain 4 oz. of solvent, 4 oz. of propellant and 4 oz. of paint.
How do I re-sell Preval Sprayers?
If you are a marketer, distributor or retailer and would like to speak with us about re-selling any Preval product, please email us sales@preval.com or call 815-634-5890.
Where can I buy a Preval Sprayer?
Preval products are sold at a most major retailers as well as many smaller outlets. They are usually available through retailers’ web sites as well. In stores, they are generally displayed in the paint spray section at major retailers, near other name-brand products such as Rustoleum.
Is the Preval Sprayer recyclable?
Yes. Both the aluminum aerosol power unit and the glass jar can be recycled. Deplete the power unit and then dispose of it.
How do I clean my Preval Sprayer?
To clean your Preval Sprayer, simply spray paint thinner alone for 10 seconds. Paint thinner is the product used to condition the paint to allow for better spray flow. Thinners include water, acetone, mineral spirits and/or lacquer thinner. Whatever thinner you are using for your solution, you can also use for cleaning. Use the proper cleaning agent as specified by the manufacturer for the paint liquid you are using.
If you do not properly clean your Preval Sprayer you will have trouble using it in the future as any contamination will reduce the Preval Sprayer’s output or even clog it completely. If the Sprayer is clogged, put your finger on the red insert inside of the button nozzle and cover it. While covering, press down on the button to force air to flow in reverse. The should clear clogs. If that doesn’t work. remove the product container by twisting it off the Sprayer, hold the Sprayer upside down and try to spray propellant.
Cleanliness is even more important on the inside of the button. If this occurs, please take off the button and soak it in thinner and use a Q-tip to clean around the insides.

How Do I Apply Gelcoat?
- DO NOT work in direct sunlight.
- Remove rails, cleats, louvers, snaps, striping tape, etc. Remove seals from the edges of parts or fittings when doing a repair around that part or fitting. Clean repair area and all tools with acetone prior to application. Spray acetone to clean out Sprayer and/or vFan Airbrush.
- Duct tape off adjacent gunwale molding, and deck fittings you are unable to remove. Duct tape is recommended over masking tape because it provides better protection.
- Gel coat should be applied in temperatures of 60ºF to 80ºF.
- Always use eye and hand protection. Read all warnings on product labels.
- FOR SAND-DAMAGED AREAS, the heavier fast-cut grits (40/80/100) are used to feather sand and ground out a routed area prior to filling. Also, they are used for the first sanding of gouges, dock dings, scratches, and blisters. When sanding areas that have been filled with putty we suggest using 40 or 80 grit sandpaper, depending on how large the repair is.
- Once the fill area is level or contoured to the desired shape, sand with 100 grit paper to remove the course scratches from 40 or 80 grit. You should also feather the surrounding area of the gelcoat repair with 220/330.
- When sanding flat areas use a rubber block. We recommend 3M abrasives for best results.
- CATALYZE FRESH BATCH OF GELCOAT properly. Measure catalyst accurately. Under- or over-catalyzed gel coat will cure slower and look faded or chalky.
- Do not add more than 15-20% by volume of Styrene Monomer.
- Pot life (amount of time for application of the product) shortens dramatically as you mix larger batch sizes. Keep in mind that you have a limited time to apply what you have mixed (usually between 5-15 minutes).
- Gelcoat will not fully cure without adding a surfacing agent or over spraying with PVA.
- When spraying gelcoat, check color thoroughly before applying. Gelcoat will not darken or change colors when it dries.
- Generally, mix 5 oz. batches. A good practice is to pour the mixed gelcoat from the mixing container into Peval product container used for application. This further assures that no uncatalyzed material is clinging to the sides of the pot. “Lay on” the gel coat in a heavy thickness (about 10 mils) using horizontal strokes, and working from top to bottom. Avoid brushing as this could remove the waxy surface additive. Remember to always lap wet.
- Generally, one heavy coat is sufficient. However, if you have opacity problems two coats may be necessary with a light sanding between coats. Once the coating (gelcoat) has cured, it should be block sanded using a 250 wet grit paper to remove all brush marks and high spots. Following this, it should be wet sanded with 320,400 and 600 wet grit paper, buffed, polished and waxed.
- If there is a trim color, you need to switch the fan aircap from the vFan Portable Airbrush System and replace it with a standard aircap. Gelcoat requires the addition of fiberglass resin hardener or catalyst (MEKP) at 2% by volume (77ºF). Measure catalyst accurately. Measure catalyst properly as using too much or too little may effect curing and cause fading and chalking. Gelcoat will not fully cure without adding a surfacing agent or wax additive sanding aid. You can spray with PVA before gel coal reaches its gel stage (5-10 min.), or adding 1oz per quart of wax additive sanding aid.
- Gelcoat may be thinned for use in a Portable Preval Sprayer with styrene monomer. The Sprayer is an amazing spray system however acetone is NOT recommended except in clean-up. Do not use more than 15% by volume of thinner, and always add thinner, tint, OPR metal flake first then add the Catalyst or Hardener and mix thoroughly. Over thinning will result in an inadequate thickness for full curing.
- For more detail and precision we recommend using vFan Portable Airbrush System which works with your compressor and is designed for portability, precision paint atomization and material dispensing; for professional touch-ups and surface repairs; surface preparation; and fast curing. The vFan Airbrush delivers a 3” fan and a 1/16” hairline spray pattern. The dual action vFan is easy to control allowing the user to manage air volume and product output. This precision-based technology allows vFan Airbrush users to atomize product finish coatings, paints and chemicals with nano-sized droplets for ultra-thin layering to feather, blend and to speed up cure times. Initially spray a cover coat as smooth and evenly as you can to cover your repair. This coat should be mostly in the repair area, and may be repeated. Sanding between coats is not necessary unless a surfacing agent has been added to your gel coat. Once your repair is covered, feather a ‘flow’ or sanding coat on the masked-off area making layered passes to avoid a buildup of gel coat in any one area.
- Each of these coats of gelcoat may involve several passes. Be even and consistent in your Sprayer or vFan movement, overlapping each previous pass slightly and not hesitating on the ends. When spraying to a radius, flow the gelcoat to the tape. In open flat areas, layer passes. Final thickness should be 12-15 mils minimum or the gelcoat may not fully cure. As soon as you are done spraying, clean your sprayer fully with acetone. Most re-sprayed gel coat will cure in 2-4 hours, although overnight cures are ideal. Begin wet sanding with the finest grit that will remove orange peel in the re-sprayed area. This will avoid unnecessary sanding scratches. Usually 320 or 400 grit wet paper is sufficient for the initial sanding. Wet sand to a 600 finish and buff with 3M Finesse-It Marine Compound and polish with Scotchgard Marine Liquid Wax.
- Store gel coat in a cool, dry place.

How do I ship the Preval Sprayer?
The Preval Sprayer’s International UN Number is: 1950 Proper Shipping Name:AEROSOLS
- Hazmat Class:2.1
- Packaging Group:No packing group (LTD QTY)
- Weight per selling unit: 0267 (5 lbs) 0268 (3 lbs)
The Preval Sprayer is exempt from Department of Transportation hazmat/hazardous good regulations.
Can I spray water-based finishes?
Absolutely. (For thicker paints, remove the strainer at the bottom of the dip tube.)
Follow these steps:
- Thin as necessary.
- Stir
- Attach
- Test spray at 45 degree angle
If any clogs occur:
- Put a warm rag over the red orifice in button, and depress button to push back any clogs.
For a more powerful spray:
- Wrap power unit with the warm rag while spraying.
Why can't I spray latex?
The Sprayer can accommodate latex paints, but the dip tube must be primed in order to do so. Remove the strainer from the dip tube, hold a rag (or use your finger) over the red insert in the button, block the orifice and push the button down for a second (you will see bubbles in the liquid as the clog of latex is pushed out of the unit).
If the power unit gets cold, wrap it with a hot towel to bring it to room temperature or the pressure will become too low.
Why Are the Sprayer and vFan Vented?
The vented cap is designed to allow small amounts of air into the product jar. When the Sprayer and vFan pull paint up the dip tube, and the pressure inside the jar reaches a certain point, air flow through the product jar relieves some of the pressure.
How Do I Spray Latex, Acrylics or Automotive Paints?
- Strain paint using a fine paint strainer or a nylon stocking. (if you don’t strain the paint the diptube will clog.)
- Thin paint accordingly.
- Remove the plug from the bottom of the dip tube.
- Test spray.
Can the Preval Sprayer be used to Spray PVA?
Yes. The Preval Sprayer is ideal for spraying PVA over larger surfaces.
The key is testing it first by thinning it with water and based on those results you’ll know of less or more water is needed.
Afterwards, make sure you clean the Sprayer with warm soapy water.
If you have small or very detailed surfaces that need PVA spraying you should use our vFan System.
I own a paint store. Why Should I buy Preval Sprayers when I can invest in an aerosol paint filling system?
The Preval Sprayer is professional, affordable, precise, compact and easy to use no matter what type of job you are tackling. Sprayers can be used multiple times with multiple paints. Paint-filling stations are much more expensive and carry a greater liability than most people realize. Further, giving your customers the ability to add their paint to a Preval Sprayer will enable you to guarantee optimal results with unadulterated paint, as opposed to independently operated filling systems that combine paints with propellants. Learn more about Preval.

vFAN AIRBRUSH
Why use fan tips?
The fan tip attachment is designed like a paint gun for painting cars. The tip is designed to give the user a better, more even result over large areas. It can be turned in any angle to give you the most control (up to 3 inches).
Why use the standard vFan Airbrush tips?
The standard tips are used for more precise control and to achieve very fine lines up to an inch.
What PSI does an vFan Airbrush need to work?
It depends on how thin the paint is: Thinner paints use 30 PSI and thicker paints use up to 80 PSI.
Can I use a vFan Airbrush with a compressor?
Yes
Is a vFan Airbrush safe to use indoors?
Yes, as long as it is a well-ventilated area. Using a mask is always recommended.
What is the best method to use the vFan Airbrush System With 150 feet of energy?
The best method is what we call the 30-3 rule. Use the vFan Airbrush for 30 seconds continuously and stop for 3 minutes so the 150 Feet of Energy does not get too cold. While waiting 3 minutes, shaking the can helps warm the propellant faster and keeps your PSI at a proper range of 15-65 PSI.
What can I spray with the vFan Airbrush?
Almost anything (oils, liquids or paints) thinned to the manufacturers’ recommended thinning guidelines. With regards to viscosity, keep the liquid a bit thicker than milk.
Is the vFan Airbrush safe for food?
Yes, when using the vFan Airbrush with a air compressor that has proper filtration. Most food additives are fda approved, so it is safe for spraying food as long as the product you are spraying is also safe. We don’t recommend using 150 Feet of Energy when spraying foods.
How thick or thin of a line can I expect to get with the vFan Airbrush?
With the vFan Airbrush, you can expect up to a 2-3 inch fan spray pattern. With the standard tips you can expect hair thin lines and up to 1-inch round thick lines.
How loud is the the vFan Airbrush system?
The 150 Feet of Energy power source is practically silent. The only sound that can be heard is the air coming out of the tip of the airbrush, which is a soft hiss.
How do I fix my vFan Airbrush when it stops working correctly?
PROBLEM | HOW TO SOLVE |
Paint is not coming out of the vFan Airbrush consistently or not at all. |
1) Tip may be clogged. Take the head assembly apart and spray it with 150 Feet of Energy to clean it. If that doesn’t work, clean with Q-tips®. 2) Dip tube is clogged. Take strainer off of dip tube and clean; spray 150 Feet of Energy through the dip tube. 3) Clean the vent at the top of the bottle with 150 Feet of Energy. 4) Email info@preval.com for more information. |
Bubbles are going through the straw into the bottle. |
1) Make sure head assembly is tightened with wrench. 2) Make sure O rings are in place. 3) Use wax or chopstick on tip threads to seal butter. 4) Make sure needle assembly matches with head. Example: Size 2 head needs to be with size 2 needle. |
There is no pressure coming out of the vFan Airbrush. |
1) Check to make sure the regulator valve is sealed correctly and turned all the way down on 150 Feet of Energy. 2) Check to make sure the trigger is seated correctly. 3) Make sure hose has no kinks in it. 4) Disassemble the airbrush and reassemble, making sure all parts are in the proper place. |
When I spray paint, the paint is coming out splattered or crooked. |
1) Check the tip of the needle with a cotton ball to make sure the tip is not bent. The tip is fragile and can bend easily. 2) Check tip with cotton ball to make sure the tip is not cracked. 3) Clean entire airbrush thoroughly with 150 Feet of Energy. If there is paint that can’t be removed, you must soak the parts separately in solvents. |
Can I use another company’s tips and needles in the vFan Airbrush?
No. Each company uses very specific lengths and diameters on their tips and needles. They are not compatible with other airbrushes.
Why is the can of 150 feet of energy getting so cold?
The power from the can is a liquid propellant from Dupont called 152a. When the propellant is being used the liquid state is turning into a gas. As this process occurs, the propellant begins to drop in temperature and begins to cool down the can.
How does the vFan Airbrush work?
The airbrush must be attached to an air source or power supply. In this system, we offer two cans of 150 Feet of Energy for portability and ease. We also recommend air compressors for larger projects. To use the vFan Airbrush, push down on the trigger to start the airflow. With the trigger pushed down, begin pulling back to spray the paint. The farther back you pull the trigger, the more paint will come out.
What types of surfaces can be airbrushed?
Any surface that can hold paint can be airbrushed. You must ensure what you are spraying is compatible with the surface you are spraying onto.
Why use an airbrush instead of a paintbrush or roller?
An airbrush is used when you want a softer more even look with no visible paintbrush strokes or roller marks.
Should i soak my vFan Airbrush to clean it?
Soaking the parts of the vFan airbrush that have paint on them in thinner is ok. But soaking the whole airbrush, you should only do this for a few minutes as the thinner will remove the lubrication that helps all the parts move smoothly. You are better off cleaning the airbrush with cleaning solution or with the paint thinner, using qtips and a cloth, before storing.
how do I spray fine lines?
Get close to what you’re going to spray onto and use less paint. You can move faster as you spray.
how do I achieve an even coat?
Use the fan spray, use more paint (pull back at least halfway). Overlap your passes by 40% to 50%.
Do I need to lubricant my vFan Airbrush?
It’s a good idea to lubricant your airbrush regularly. Lubrication keeps the airbrush parts working smoothly. Only use airbrush lubrication, we will be coming out with some shortly so email us at info@preval.com. DON’T USE WD-40!
Why isn’t paint sticking to metal or plastic?
Usually when paint isn’t sticking to a surface, it is because the paint has nothing to “grab” onto. Scuffing up the glossy finish with 1,000-grit sandpaper or lightly with an SOS pad will help. Adhesion promoter will also help. After scuffing, wipe the surface with a degreaser.
What is patent pending regarding the vFan Kit? What puts it in a higher class than other similar kits?
The patent application is focused around the functionality of the system. Because its only a patent pending we have to be careful discussing too much detail.
You wont find another system like this in the market. key features:
- Comes with fan aircap and detail aircap
- No compressor is needed but works very well with them.
- The aircaps are interchangeable by simply screwing off and on.

How to Apply Gelcoat?
- DO NOT work in direct sunlight
- Remove rails, cleats, louvers, snaps, striping tape, etc. Remove seals from the edges of parts or fittings when doing a repair around that part or fitting. Clean repair area and all tools with acetone prior to application. Spray acetone to clean out Sprayer and/or vFan Airbrush.
- Duct tape off adjacent gunwale molding, and deck fittings you are unable to remove. Duct tape is recommended over masking tape because it provides better protection.
- Gel coat should be applied in temperatures of 60ºF to 80ºF
- Always use eye and hand protection. Read all warnings on product labels
- SAND DAMAGED AREA -The heavier fast-cut grits (40/80/100) are used to feather sand and ground out a routed area prior to filling.
- Do not add more than 15-20% by volume of Styrene Monomer
- Pot life (amount of time for application of the product) shortens dramatically as you mix larger batch sizes. Keep in mind that you have a limited time to apply what you have mixed (usually between 5-15 minutes).
- Gel coat will not fully cure without adding a surfacing agent or over spraying with PVA
- Spraying Gelcoat Check color thoroughly before applying. Gelcoat will not darken or change colors when it dries. The color wet is the color when dry.
- Generally mix 5oz batches. A good practice is to pour the mixed gel coat from the mixing container into Peval Product container used for application.
Gel Coat requires the addition of fiberglass resin hardener or catalyst (MEKP) at 2% by volume (77ºF) Measure catalyst accurately.
The Sprayer is an amazing spray system however Acetone is NOT recommended except in clean up.
Why is the vFan Airbrush superior to other spray systems?
The dual action vFan Airbrush allows for the user to control air flow and product output. This precision based vFan Airbrush is capable of atomizing coatings, paints, chemicals at nano size droplets giving ultra thin coatings or dispensing thicker coatings at a 1/16th” pin pattern to a 3″ fan pattern. Further the vFan works with compressors as well as being portable using pressurized gas which is necessary for certain Industrial, automotive and other industries
Does the vFan have the capacity to paint a mini bike frame (Honda mini trail size) or a bicycle frame?
The vFan will absolutely be the best option. For larger projects like this we recommend using the vFan with a standard plug in compressor. Otherwise our 150 feet of ENERGY will work fine but because the portable units are more designed for “on-the-fly touch-ups” you should buy an additional 2-3 units to interchange throughout the job.
Where can I find the vFan System MSDS Sheets?
Will the vFan Airbrush and hose work with my compressor?
Yes . The Preval vFan air hose is built with 1/4″ NPT female compressor fitting for our vFan regulator for both our 150 feet of ENERGY and our Ultralight compressors. Typically fitting sizes are 1/4″ – 1/2″ we just happen to work with the 1/4″ size.
If your compressor has a fitting that is larger they can go to Home Depot or any other similar retailer and purchase an adapter to pair a different size. Typical cost is a few dollars.
What is the CFM for the vFan Airbrush
You will need a minimum of 20 PSI @ .5 CFM or 1/6th hp for a compressor.
What is the EDU and how does it work?
1. Attach the one end of the air hose to the pressure regulator valve which is secured onto the 150 feet of energy.
2. Feed the other end of the air hose through the bottom of the EDU lid and Screw into the bottom of the airbrush.
3. Control air flow pressure by turning the pressure regulator valve clockwise. Test spray vFan. Adjust pressure regulator to meet the needs of atomizing the paint
4. Once adjusted, add room temperature water into the edu, 75% full of 750 ml, and submerge the 150 feet of energy into the EDU and secure the lid.
5. Edu will keep the 150 feet of energy from freezing up, for long lasting continuous spray. After 5 minutes or so, or if you notice any inconsistencies with spray performance check the 150 feet of Energy can as it may be getting close to bring empty, evacuated.
Why should your firm become a distributor?
The Sprayer and vFan Portable Airbrush System fills a void in all of the Coatings Industries from Industrial, Contractor; and Consumer Users. By simply connecting an aerosol can to our Delivery system any Coating User can professionally deliver unadulterated, fine finishes, touch-ups and coatings for small surfaces.
Does Preval offer a Drop Ship Program
What is the competing product to the vFan?
What industry experts are telling us is Iwata’s Kustom TH is a competing touch up Airbrush which also features a fan spray pattern. The main differences include:
- vFan comes with a .9mm (tip, needle and cap) and is adjustable to .66mm and .38 mm heads Where as the Iwata Kustom is standard with a .5mm – therefore vFan sprays thicker viscosity products, metallics, and more product flow.
- vFan can go portable with our cans of 150 Feet of ENERGY and can work off of any electric compressor air source using only .5 CFM where the Iwata requires 1.2CFM and must be used with an electric compressor only therefore the vFan is much more versatile
- vFan Portable Airbrush System has a MSRP of $199.95 and the system includes an air hose, an additional needle , 3 product containers, tools, extra dip tubes, a regulator, and 2 cans of 150 Feet of ENERGY compressors and more, whereas the Iwata Kustom TH retails for around $400 and only comes with the airbrush therefore the vFan Portable Airbrush System is far less expensive.
- vFan is a siphon fed system allowing for greater control of spraying most paints and coatings design for touch ups whereas the Iwata Kustom TH is a gravity fed unit with limited product control and mostly engineered for the crafting.
- vFan is made in the USA – Iwata is made in Japan

EDU How To Guide
Is the .9mm fan tip adjustable or doesit only sprays the 3 inch pattern?Likewise, does the standard .9mm cap only do 1/16 lines or is it adjustable?
The vFan system is adjustable no matter which size you use as its dual action system; so you can adjust the size of the spray pattern by following 2 steps:
1) pulling the trigger back increases paint volume
2) the closer or further you bring the vFan to the surface your spraying will naturally adjust pattern size
Can the vFan be used to Spray PVA?
Yes. Particularly works well with our standard .9mm fan cap – Our vFan is ideal for spraying PVA.
The key is testing it first by thinning it with water and based on those results you’ll know of less or more water is needed.
Afterwards, make sure you clean the vFan with warm soapy water.
If you have large surfaces that need PVA spraying you should also buy our EDU-.
