A decorative mirror for a fraction of the cost

Trendy decorative mirrors can be pricey. But you can make your own DIY plastic spoon flower mirror for under $20, using the Preval Sprayer, acrylic paint and plastic spoons.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 2 Preval Sprayers
  • Acrylic paint in your color of choice
  • 200 plastic spoons
  • Scissors
  • A large and small MDF wreath form
  • White foam core
  • Hot glue gun
  • E6000 glue
  • Sandpaper

Prepare the spoons

  • With your scissors, cut the handles off 200 plastic spoons. Then, use sandpaper to file any sharp edges.
  • Spray the spoons
  • Next, prepare the Preval Sprayer. Add 1 oz. of paint and 2 oz. water to the jar. Cap, shake and attach the spray can. Spray a coat of paint onto the spoons, and let them dry before spraying them again for the best coverage.

Make the mirror backing

Trace the largest MDF wreath form onto foam core. Cut the foam, and then hot glue the large wreath form to the outside edge. Center the small wreath form inside the larger one and glue it, as well. For an extra durable bond, use E6000 glue and hot glue. Next, spray the foam core and wreath forms, using the same color as your spoons.

Glue the spoons

Use hot glue to secure spoons side by side to the outside edge. Next, glue the mirror to the small wreath form. Then, glue the spoon handles between the first row of spoons and the mirror. This is your support for putting the rest of the spoons into place. For best results, spray the spoon handles before you glue them onto the mirror backing.

Stack another four layers of spoons around the base. And, finally, glue the last row onto the mirror itself.
